DHT and Peptides: The Epic Battle for Your Hair

There’s a lot of noise out there about what causes hair loss. You may have heard it attributed to the natural aging process, shampooing your hair or wearing a hat too frequently, using too much product, spending too much time in the sun—the list goes on, and most of the rumors are decidedly untrue. So stop blaming your mama, because while baldness is a genetic trait, it can be inherited from either parent.

Who’s the real enemy here?

Whether or not you’re susceptible to balding primarily comes down to how sensitive your hair follicles are to dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. DHT is an androgen (male sex hormone) necessary for the development of male characteristics like a deep voice and facial hair. It’s produced when an enzyme called 5α-reductase interacts with testosterone. Nope, not even that hair loss myth is true—men with both high and low levels of testosterone can experience male pattern baldness, or androgenetic alopecia.

When DHT binds to androgen receptors in the scalp, it interferes with the delivery of amino acids and minerals to hair follicles. The lack of necessary nourishment causes the follicles to go through a process called miniaturization. They shrink and start producing hair more slowly before stopping altogether.

What’s the battle plan?

The two most common hair loss-fighting drugs are finasteride (Propecia) and minoxidil (Rogaine). Finasteride binds to 5α-reductase to prevent the production of DHT so that miniaturized hair follicles can start growing hair again. Minoxidil, a vasodilator, doesn’t target DHT directly, but it increases blood flow to the scalp by relaxing the muscle walls of the blood vessels located there. Hair follicles receive the nourishment they need to transition from the resting phase of hair growth back into the growing phase, resulting in a thicker head of hair. But not so fast—these chemicals can produce undesired side effects, like heightened testosterone levels and low sex drive.

With Hair ResQ, we took a different approach. We wanted to create products that deliver noticeable, lasting results without the use of drugs or chemicals. Enter Hair ResQ Follicle Stimulator™ and Follicle Maintainer™. These two serums utilize a revolutionary complex of active peptides, which are amino acid chains that have already been generating buzz in the health and beauty community for their anti-aging potential. The peptides in our CBP Tri-Complex are specifically formulated to target DHT by inhibiting its production, so biotin can revitalize existing hair strands and caffeine can stimulate hair follicles to produce stronger, healthier hair.
